Smartphone advertising fueled record earnings on 27 January 2016 for Facebook, as the company reported more than 1 billion US dollar in quarterly income for the first time – more than double the year before. Facebook netted 1.56 billion US dollar for 2015’s fourth quarter, up 125 percent from 701 million for the same period in 2014. Revenues rose 52 percent year-on-year to 5.84 billion US dollar. The world’s largest internet social network reported 3.69 billion US dollar in net income for the full year, up from 2.94 billion for 2014. Advertising accounts for nearly all of Facebook’s revenue, and 80 percent of ad revenue came from adverts on Facebook’s mobile sites. As of the end of 2015, Facebook had 1.59 billion active users worldwide, the company said, an increase of 40 million over the previous quarter. More than nine out of 10 users accessed Facebook via smartphones and tablets. Facebook has recently made changes to the way ads appear – between posts on user feeds, rather than to the side – to a noticeable spike in sales. EPA/PETER DaSILVA
