epa07264928 A protester dressed as a ‘Marianne’ – the French Republic’s national symbol – takes part in a protest march during a women’s ‘Gilets Jaune’ (Yellow Vests) between Place de la Bastille and Republique, in Paris, France, 06 January 2019. The women’s protest comes one day after a large Yellow Vest protest in Paris, dubbed ‘Act VIII’, as it was the eighth national protest on a Saturday, which saw sporadic clashes with riot police and burning barricades in central Paris. The so-called ‘gilets jaunes’ (yellow vests) is a grassroots protest movement with supporters from a wide span of the political spectrum, that originally started with protest across the nation in late 2018 against high fuel prices. The movement in the meantime also protests the French government’s tax reforms, the increasing costs of living and some even call for the resignation of French president Emmanuel Macron.
